Autel showed the EVO at CES in January 2018 and put it on sale that June, and it went out of stock almost at once. It was a folding drone aimed straight at DJI's Mavic Pro, with 4K at 60 fps and a 100 Mbps bitrate that DroneDJ compared to the Phantom 4 Pro's video specs, from a smaller sensor. Its party trick was the controller, which has its own 3.3-inch OLED screen showing a live 720p view, so you can fly without a phone. Autel rated it for 30 minutes and 7 km of range. Autel no longer lists it, and it has no Remote ID, so a used one is a cheap way into 4K once you add a broadcast module.

Takeoff weight: 863 g, register it
Remote IDNeeds a Remote ID module
The original EVO isn't on the FAA's Remote ID Declaration of Compliance list, and DroneDJ's 2023 rundown says it needs an add-on module. Fly it with a broadcast module or only at a FRIA. At 863 g it must be registered with the FAA however you fly it.
Account lock
Autel doesn't document an account lock for the original EVO. It can fly from its controller's own screen without a phone, so ask the seller to show it powering up, linking and lifting off.
Controller
The EVO came with a controller that has a built-in 3.3-inch OLED screen, showing flight data or a live 720p view without a phone. Make sure it's in the listing, since you can't fly it without one.
App and firmware
Autel Explorer, on iOS or Android, adds advanced settings and modes like Dynamic Track, Viewpoint, Orbit and Waypoint missions through a phone on the controller. Autel's app download page still names the EVO I among the drones Explorer controls.

What to check
Faults on the original EVO aren't well documented. It's an old drone Autel no longer sells, so battery health and a working controller matter most, and it needs a broadcast module to fly legally under Remote ID.
01Remote ID: Budget for a Remote ID broadcast module before you buy. Without one it can only fly at a FRIA.
02Controller: Check the screen controller is in the photos. Its 3.3-inch display should light up with a live view in the seller's video.
03Batteries: Ask how many batteries come with it and how old they are, and look at each from the side. They should sit flat, with no bulge or split seams.
04Gimbal and lens: Zoom in on the camera glass and gimbal in the photos. The lens should be clean and unscratched, and the gimbal should sit level.
05Crash history: Ask if it's ever crashed, and check the arms, props and shell in the photos. You want no cracks and no mismatched replacement parts.
06Test flight: Ask for a short video of it taking off, hovering and landing. It should hold steady with no warnings on the controller screen.
We'd buy the $699 kit titled with the remote, four batteries, a charger and a hard case, since Autel no longer sells the EVO and battery health matters most on one this old. There are at least 19 listed and most ask $400–725 delivered, and the cheapest titled with its remote and batteries is $260 delivered, though its photo shows only the carry bag. The original EVO isn't on the FAA's Remote ID list, so it needs a broadcast module or can only fly at a FRIA, and at 863 g it must be registered however you fly it. Make sure the controller with the 3.3-inch screen is in the photos, since it can't fly without one, and ask for a video of it taking off, hovering and landing. Skip the boxed one at $1,029, about 1.7 times the median.
