The R1 was Skydio's first drone, announced in February 2018, and it introduced the idea of a self-flying camera. Twelve navigation cameras and an NVIDIA Jetson TX1 let it follow a runner or cyclist and dodge trees with no pilot at the sticks, which nothing else on sale could do. It was flown from a phone app, weighed about a kilogram and managed 16 minutes a charge. Skydio built it in small numbers, starting with a Frontier Edition assembled at its own headquarters, and treated it as a proof of concept for the Skydio 2. Today it's a collector's piece. Skydio lists it as end of life with no support.

The rules, the lock and what it pairs with
Takeoff weight: 1,000 g, register it
Remote IDNeeds a Remote ID module
The R1 isn't on the FAA's Remote ID Declaration of Compliance list and Skydio no longer supports it, so fly it with a Remote ID broadcast module or at an FAA-recognized identification area (FRIA). At about 1 kg it must be registered with the FAA.
Account lock
Skydio hasn't documented an owner lock for the R1. It's past end of life, so there's no Skydio service to transfer.
Controller
No controller. The R1 was flown from the Skydio R1 app on a phone, with on-screen controls.
App and firmware
The Skydio R1 app. Skydio's end-of-life policy says the R1 and all R1 products are at end of life and no longer supported, so check the app still installs on your phone before you buy.
Should come with it
Spare batteries and the charger, since Skydio no longer supports the R1
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Skydio no longer supports the R1, so repairs and batteries depend on what the seller includes. Short 16-minute flights were a known limitation when it was new.
01App: Check that the Skydio R1 app still installs on your phone before you buy. Without it the drone can't fly.
02Batteries: Ask how many batteries come with it and whether they hold a charge. They should be flat with no swelling.
03Flight video: Ask the seller for a short video of it taking off and following someone. It should lift off and track smoothly.
04Cameras: Look at the navigation lenses around the body in the photos. They should be clean and uncracked.
05Remote ID: Plan on a broadcast module to fly it outside a FRIA. Make sure you have room to mount one.
Only one Skydio R1 is for sale, at $900 with free shipping, so there's no market to read yet. Skydio has put the R1 and all R1 products at end of life with no support, so check the Skydio R1 app still installs on your phone before you buy, and ask what batteries and charger come with it, since the title names none. It isn't on the FAA's Remote ID list, so you'd fly it with a broadcast module or at a FRIA, and at about 1 kg it must be registered with the FAA. It isn't titled as the Frontier Edition, the first run built at Skydio's headquarters.
